Nestled in the idyllic countryside of Upshire, lies The Sanctuary Farm, a tranquil haven for both humans and animals alike. This picturesque farm is set amidst rolling hills, lush green pastures, and surrounded by a natural woodland that provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. With its pristine surroundings and serene ambiance, The Sanctuary Farm offers a unique experience to visitors seeking a respite from the daily grind. From the moment you set foot on this charming farm, you are transported to a world of natural beauty, where you can reconnect with nature and experience a slower pace of life.
The farm is on the site of the obelisk dedicated to Boudicca.
The legend of Boudicca, the fierce warrior queen of the Iceni tribe, is deeply intertwined with Epping Forest. This connection dates back to the 18th century when Ambresbury Banks, an Iron Age hillfort located within the forest, was identified as Boudicca’s Camp during her famous rebellion against the Roman Empire. Despite the lack of concrete evidence supporting this theory, the association between Boudicca and Epping Forest continues to capture the imagination of many.
According to local folklore, Boudicca met her tragic end in the uplands north of the forest. Some say she ingested poisonous berries, while others claim she perished by bleeding out into the waters of the Cobbins Brook. Regardless of the exact circumstances, her death added to the mystique surrounding her legacy and cemented her place in the history of the area.
The mythology of Boudicca and her connection to Epping Forest even inspired the construction of a monument in her honor. The obelisk, located on what is now The Sanctuary Farm, stands as a testament to her bravery and leadership. This striking structure not only commemorates the warrior queen but also serves as a reminder of the forest’s rich and storied past.
Today, the legend of Boudicca lives on, captivating the hearts and minds of visitors to Epping Forest. As they walk through the ancient woods and marvel at the stunning natural beauty, many can’t help but imagine the battles that were fought and the sacrifices made by those who came before. The mythology of Boudicca is just one piece of the puzzle that makes this forest such a fascinating and beloved place.
